Making a Cleaner and Better Environment for Our Community May 15, 2010 American Disposal Services sponsored The Relay for Life for the 2010 Season. The fundraiser was held from April through May 15, 2010. Numerous activities such as: the penny wars, a bake sale, parking spot raffle and jeans Wednesdays aided in our goal to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. The Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten and that those who face cancer will be supported. This all nighter is comprised of one or more people walking around a track at all times. During the relay there is music, food and entertainment throughout the night. American Disposal Services sponsors this event every year, and we had a booth set up as well. Overall, the event is a fun way to express our hope that cancer will someday be eliminated. The Relay for Life kicked off on a dark, stormy night at West Springfield High school. Sponsors and volunteers alike kept their spirits high by setting up their tents and walking in the hallways of the school. Once the storm cell had passed, police allowed all people to head down to the field for festivities. As a team we set up our Sponsor Station, one of four, and gave out free snacks and walked on the track. At one point all of the lights went out and the luminaries lighted the walkway of the track and field. A man told a story of a woman, his wife that had passed away due to cancer. It was a very sad ten minutes, listening to his story, the stillness in the air, the tears running down a cheek or two… At that moment, we all remembered why we were there, for her, for a brother, sister, aunt, mother, friend. Spirits rose amongst the crowd, the glow sticks came out and the party started. At midnight, the hungry were fed with pizza, children played Nintendo Wii, and the band was playing. It was a great night, the energy was intense and everyone had a wonderful time. May 15, 2010
Sterling, Virginia –May15, 2010. Residents learned about recycling at the Heritage Farm Museum of Loudoun County on Saturday, May 15th. The event concluded a month of recycling awareness activities in Claude Moore Park. According to Claude Moore Park Recreation Center educational programmer and recycling coordinator Sharon Kilpatrick, the Rec Center doubled the amount of recycling it collected through educational efforts with staff and visitors. Recycling helps the environment by keeping re-usable materials out of landfills and providing raw materials to produce new goods.
April 18, 2010 The Cascades Community held a trash bash community clean up event on April 18th. With the help of the community, over 23 bags of trash and 25 bags of recycling were collected! American Disposal assisted in the clean up with proper disposal of all the recycling and trash.
